Everybody knows that Manitoba winters can be very cold. Even the southern areas of the province experience temperatures as low as -40 Celsius at least a few times each season. Between the cold weather, the shorter days and the fact that winter lasts for almost half the year, it’s no wonder many Manitobans wish they could hibernate until summer. Less sunlight and being stuck inside can have negative impacts on mental health, meaning it’s super important to find adventures that get you out and about during the winter months. After living in the province for many years, here are my favorite Manitoba winter activities.
Manitoba Winter Safety
Before we get into the recommendations, it is important to note that Manitoba winters can have extreme weather and it’s not always safe to be outside. Always check the windchill and weather forecast before going outside. If conditions are safe, make sure to dress appropriately and watch for signs of frostbite.
1. Snowshoeing or Winter Hiking
Getting outside for a quick walk down your lane or around your block is a great way to get outside and get moving. This option is great because it’s available to everyone and a short walk is feasible even in Manitoba’s coldest weather.
There are also opportunities to go on longer walks or hikes if you’re looking for more adventure. My favorite winter trail in Manitoba is the Brule trail in Riding Mountain National Park. This is a beautiful hike with 2 & 4 km loops through the forest. The snow turns the area into a winter wonderland and the longer loop takes you out to a frozen lake with a bench (which is a great spot to stop for a snack).
When the snow is packed, snowshoes are optional. You can find out which trails in Riding Mountain are open and their current conditions here.

2. Skating
If you’re new to Manitoba, you might be surprised to find that almost everyone knows how to skate. If you want to learn, your local rink probably has programming or if you ask your friends, you’re likely to find someone who can help.
Once you know how to skate, there are many outdoor skating adventures around Manitoba. Many communities clear patches of ice on lakes or rivers, providing a fun way to get outside. Riding Mountain National Park has recently started creating skating trails through the trees near the visitor center at Clear Lake. You can combine this activity with a winter hike to create an excellent day of adventure.

3. Downhill Skiing
While there are no mountains, you can still get out and have an enjoyable day on the slopes in snowy Manitoba. Notable ski hills include Asessippi Ski Resort near Russell, Ski Valley at Minnedosa and SpringHill Winter Sports Park in Winnipeg. Asessippi is the largest ski resort in Manitoba and it’s definitely worth the drive. With three chair lifts, a bunny hill and a tubing park, Asessippi has something for everyone.
4. Ice Fishing in Manitoba
Another way to enjoy Manitoba in the winter is to go ice fishing. This activity requires a lot of equipment but if you like fishing it can be worth the investment. Lake of the Prairies is a great place to set up. Make sure to bring lots of snacks to enhance the experience!
If you’re visiting Lake of the Prairies, you’re already very close to Asessippi. Combine the two activities for a weekend of fun.

5. Watch Hockey
Hockey is often thought of as Canada’s sport and almost anywhere you live in Manitoba is almost guaranteed to have a team you can go watch. Going to local games is usually inexpensive so it’s an easy way to get out of the house, even if you aren’t a big fan of the game. Hockey often brings members of the community together and good company makes the long winter days pass more quickly.

Whether it’s your first winter in Manitoba or your 20th, I hope these tips inspire you to get out and make the most of the winter season!
